【摘要】:Hydrogencyanideishighlytoxic.Inrelativelylowquantities,hydrogencyanidecancauseasphyxiaanddeath.TheNationalFireProtectionAssociationhasassignedaflammabilityratingof4(severefirehazard)tohydrogencyanide.1.1Thispracticeisusedtodeterminetheconcentrationofgaseoushydrogencyanide(HCN)fromanycombustiondeviceoratmospherewherecyanidemaybepresent.WhileprimarilydesignedforthemeasurementofgasphaseHCN,thesamplecollectiondescribedinthispracticealsoincludescyanideion(CN-)absorbedparticlesthatmaybepresentinthesamplingatmosphere.1.1.1SamplescanbecollectedfromaclosedchambersuchastheNBSsmokeboxdescribedinTestMethodE662provideditisequippedwithsamplingports.1.1.2OpenchamberssuchasindustrialworkareasorlargescalefirescanbemonitoredforHCNwiththispractice.1.1.3TheHCNemissionsofaflowthroughsystemcanbedeterminedbysamplingfromitsdischargestack.ExamplesofsuchsystemsincludelargescalemanufacturingapplicationsandtheconecalorimeterdescribedinTestMethodE1354.1.2ThispracticecanbeusedtomonitorHCNlevelsinlabscalefiresmokeeffluentsinordertoestimatetoxicityofgasesproducedfromburningmaterials.SeeGuideE800.1.3Theconcentrationrangeofhydrogencyanidewillbedependentonthevolumeofgassampled,thevolumeofsodiumhydroxidesolutionplacedintheimpingerduringsampling,andtheanalyticalmethodusedtomeasurecyanide.Forexample,thelowerlimitofdetectionwouldbe0.002-mg/m3when0.1-m3ofcombustioneffluentiscollectedinto100-mLsodiumhydroxidesolutionbasedonadetectionlimitof0.002mg/Lcyanideintheimpingersolutionwhenusingtheflowinjectionanalysis(FIA)systemdescribedinTestMethodD6888.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
