【摘要】:Thetermshrinkagelimit,expressedasamoisturecontentinpercenttothenearestwholenumber,representstheamountofwaterrequiredjusttofillallofthevoidsofagivencohesivesoilatitsminimumvoidratioobtainedbyovendrying.Theshrinkagelimitcanbeusedtoevaluatetheshrinkagepotential,crackdevelopmentpotential,andswellpotentialofearthworkinvolvingcohesivesoils.Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythisstandardisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingit,andthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection/andthelike.UsersofthisstandardarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodcoverstheprocedurefordeterminingtheshrinkagelimitofsoils.1.2Thedataobtainedusingthistestmethodmayalsobeusedtocalculateshrinkageratio,volumetricshrinkage,andlinearshrinkage.1.3Thistestmethodisapplicableonlyforcohesivesoils.1.4SincethistestmethodisperformedonlyonthatportionofasoilwhichpassestheNo.40(425-x03BC;m)sieve,therelativeconsistencyofthisportionofthesoiltothepropertiesofthesampleasawholemustbeconsideredwhenusingtheseprocedurestoevaluatethepropertiesofasoil.1.5TheshrinkagelimitalongwiththeliquidlimitandplasticlimitofsoilsareoftencollectivelyreferredtoastheAtterberglimitsinrecognitionoftheirformationbySwedishsoilscientist,A.Atterberg.Theselimitsdistinguishtheboundariesoftheseveralconsistencystatesofcohesivesoils.1.6AllrecordedandcalculatedvaluesshallconformtotheguideforsignificantdigitsandroundingestablishedinPracticeD6026.1.6.1Theproceduresusedtospecifyhowdataarecollected/recordedandcalculatedinthisstandardareregardedastheindustrystandard.Inaddition,theyarerepresentativeofthesignificantdigitsthatshouldgenerallyberetained.Theproceduresuseddonotconsidermaterialvariation,purposeforobtainingthedata,specialpurposestudies,oranyconsiderationsfortheuserx2019;sobjectives;anditiscommonpracticetoincreaseorreducesignificantdigitsofreporteddatatobecommensuratewiththeseconsiderations.Itisbeyondthescopeofthisstandardtoconsidersignificantdigitsusedinanalysismethodsforengineeringdesign.1.7ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Nootherunitsofmeasurementareincludedinthisstandard.1.8Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.Forspecificsafetyhazards,seeSection7andNote4andNoteX1.1.
